Again and again we hear news that Kuwait is becoming an obese nation, and we see Doctors on TV explaining how such exposure to fast food is fueling the health epidemic in Kuwait! Our country is full of crap, i for about 4 years do not believe what is said on TV, or from governmental official nor the parliament members. I even promised my self never to vote again. Many in this county talk about progress but the only difference and new things we see are malls and hotels. Its clear to us that progress within the government is not in the agenda any more. Its not that of a difficult agenda to be accepted within the government. The health system is breaking up, electricity is running out, the educational system is failing and the students too. One of the major success factors of NBK is that it always had a stable Board, compare that to Kuwait and you see that each two years that pass we get new ministers and a new parliament, nothing is stable when each new mind set comes in to fix things the whole foundation shakes and rattles and come up with new ministers. (Sorry about the political ventilation but even myself who hates Kuwaiti politics some issue’s get on my nerve) Al rai TV is promoting a new child program which features Ronald Mcdonald the clown as the TV host. So when we use the TV channels to communicate how the health epidemic is on the rise, and at the same time these same TV channels are promoting Mcdonald’s for children aged 4 and above. When at such age young kids get use to the taste of Mcdonald’s food, what happens when they become teenagers or parents! My only dilemma here is why not the Ministry of Health in Kuwait is doing something about it, Why cant we stop advertising such fast food brands directed at children in Kuwait! Or are we in a educatinal time gap that the people heading the country are obsolete tin cans! The ministry of higher education is sending thousands of Kuwaitis on Scholarships to learn become innovative in their fields but as soon as they arrive to Kuwait fully energetic they mix into the slow, lame, unprofessional and inexperienced society. Falling back like all others that have tried to change, we are turning into a trap of Kuwaiti culture that is striping the purpose of life and advancement and the only thing we seek to do is how to live another day in a materialistic Kuwait.

The ministry of health is a mess…..a children’s show with Ronald Macdonald is the last of its worries.
;( its such a shame….cuz at the end of the day any problems in healthcare or in our hospitals reflect on Kuwaiti doctors and how they are no good. Which is so untrue.

Delicately Realistic: Doctors in Kuwait are one thing and the system itself is another, but they do have a small part to blame…they are the ones that can do something not us.

I agree with everything you said. But I believe that realistic no how matter how much we promote healthy food, it will never eradicate junk food. Featuring Ronald McDonald on TV practically happens in every country. How many western movies and shows have junk food shown in them!?
I don’t believe in extremes. Junk food is not the sole cause of obesity. I have junk food 3 times a week on average during vacation and almost everyday when I have classes. Yet, I’m not obese and hardly overweight. To tackle the problem, I think giving a class of health and fitness on the problems resulting from obesity and the causes of it. Teaching kids about portion sizes and opting for healthier choices while not giving up what they really like. And I honestly believe our physical education classes need major reform. The stupid things they “teach” on those classes. Teaching kids about what they’re eating, how to choose healthier and include physical activities in their lifestyle. One way to do it is build decent gyms in local areas for low prices anyone can afford. I know that they have all sorts of sports for guys for very cheap prices in the “nadi”m they also have access to the gyms, but the girls are very much neglected.

As a matter of fact Qaiss you are very right about the ‘instability’ of the government/parliment. Actaully most MP’s are ‘feast loving’ people, in a sense once they are elected the first move/action they take is ‘grilling’ a minister he/she opposes, so what kind of stability situation do we expect? Its a finger pointing game rather than pin pointing the problem from the roots to resolve it, a new minister will carry the burden of previous ministers errors/mistakes, and get penalised for it. That’s just defined as ‘New-Kuwaiti Just’. Allah Kareem

dishevelled: i did not realy mean that fast food advertising is making me that upset, it just triggered my political vent, but when we become more and more knowlegable and specalized in everthing we do as Kuwaitis, we cant tackle many problems from each level, if its high level like car accidents to kids tv shows promoting fast food chains. simply just monitor how many people cross the red light at 2 pm every day, and goes much lower at night. I guess heat and sun exposure must play a role too, why not legalize window tinting to a certian limit and see what results come out, but no! the only excuse that the ministry of interior comes up with is that it creates more sex related incidents!! i guess sigmund freud was correct saying that every desicion men take has sex behind it:P who should have studies the arab world to clearly say “my point excalty”

Dishevelled… I think it is now illegal to sell junk food thru children’s tv programming in the UK. Unfortunately, The US is another story. it is run by these lobbying groups, even food industries have them their, and they pay the senators off. Thats the difference between uk and the US.
